Cases using septal cartilage and revision rhinoplasty

Surgeries that use septal cartilage and those that rebuild the septum itself may sound similar, but they address different considerations. This collection includes a case where an upturned nose was corrected by using septal cartilage on the right side and donor rib cartilage on the left. Rather than assuming only one type of cartilage is used, you can see how materials are combined in practice.

Another article describes a case where a previous surgery harvested a significant amount of septal cartilage, leaving insufficient structural support. In that case, septal reconstruction using autologous rib cartilage is documented. Distinguishing between newly harvested cartilage, previously used cartilage, and the current condition of the remaining septum makes it easier to understand the revision rhinoplasty process.

Key considerations when revising ear cartilage rhinoplasty with autologous rib cartilage

A case of a patient seeking a slimmer line after a previous rhinoplasty. Nasal tip reconstruction with autologous rib cartilage, nasal bridge implant replacement with lowering of the radix, nasal sill reduction, and full-face autologous fat grafting were performed together.

Nasal reconstruction when almost no septum remains after two nose surgeries

This is a case of septal cartilage deficit, nasal bone asymmetry, and nasal obstruction remaining after two surgeries. Through a closed approach, autologous rib cartilage was used for septal reconstruction, along with nasolabial angle correction, nasal bone asymmetry correction, and radix adjustment.

Why a nose becomes upturned and the columella retracts after repeated revisions, and how to reconstruct the septum

A case where damage from previous surgeries led to collapse of the anterior septum and nostril asymmetry. The septum was reconstructed using autologous rib cartilage, followed by nasal tip rhinoplasty with donor rib cartilage and implant replacement.

Why the nasal tip elongates and droops years after rhinoplasty, and how to correct it

A case involving a long, drooping nasal tip and nasal obstruction following previous rhinoplasty with a silicone implant and septal cartilage. The nasal tip was corrected using autologous rib cartilage, performed concurrently with septoplasty, inferior turbinate reduction, and synechia adhesiolysis.

Changes that occur when an implant is positioned high and deviated: methods for replacement and bulbous tip correction

A high, deviated silicone implant was replaced to lower the radix, and septal extension was performed using donor rib cartilage. Partial soft tissue resection, cartilage tie, and rhinitis surgery addressed the bulbous tip and nasal obstruction.

Why the nasal tip deviates to one side after rhinoplasty and methods for reconstructing its support structure

Septal cartilage damaged from previous surgeries was reconstructed using autologous rib cartilage, and the lower lateral cartilages were restored. Lateral osteotomy and rhinitis surgery were performed concurrently to correct the crooked nose and nostril asymmetry.

Common questions before reading the cases

Are septal cartilage and donor rib cartilage ever used together?

In one case, septal extension was performed using septal cartilage on the right side and donor rib cartilage on the left to correct an upturned nose. Because this is an actual record where different materials were placed on each side, surgery involving septal cartilage should not be assumed to rely on only a single material. Specific placement details can be reviewed in the main text.

If a large amount of septal cartilage was harvested in a prior surgery, which revision rhinoplasty records should I review?

You can review cases where very little septal cartilage remained or where the remaining portion sustained significant damage. Those articles describe the process of reconstructing the septal framework using autologous rib cartilage. These are records of each patient's specific intraoperative findings, and the fact that septal cartilage was harvested previously does not mean the same reconstruction is necessarily required.
