History of mesh use and revision rhinoplasty cases with removal

In cases involving mesh, it is important to distinguish between the surgical history known to the patient and the materials confirmed during surgery. Some records note a history where mesh was used across the entire nasal bridge and nasal tip, while others describe identifying and removing mesh from the septum during revision surgery. The location where it was found provides clues to understanding the details of the current surgery.

We have also gathered records where silicone implants, donor rib cartilage, and mesh were used at different times across multiple surgeries. Just because the original record uses the term "mesh" does not mean the specific brand name or the exact properties of every material can be known. Follow the timeline to see what materials were used in the past, what materials were removed this time, and how the structural framework was subsequently reinforced.

Why mesh remaining in the septum causes an upturned nose, and reconstruction after removal

This is a case where mesh left in the septum after previous surgeries resulted in an upturned nose and excessive nostril show. All foreign material was removed, followed by septal reconstruction using autologous rib cartilage, replacement of the silicone implant, and reinforcement of the skin with acellular dermal matrix.

Why the nose looks short and the columella retracts after revision rhinoplasty, and how to reconstruct the septum

To correct septal cartilage loss from 3 prior surgeries, a short nose appearance, and a bulbous tip, the septum was reconstructed using autologous rib cartilage and the radix was lowered.

Why a mass obstructing the nostril develops, and how to perform resection and reconstruction

This is a case where a chronic inflammatory mass that developed after repeated surgeries and obstructed the nostril was precisely resected, restoring breathing function and stabilizing the nasal tip structure.

How to correct a contracted nose and inflammation caused by residual foreign material

Contracture and septal defect developed due to residual mesh and a foreign body reaction from previous surgeries. We removed the remaining foreign material, reconstructed the septum using autologous rib cartilage, and performed a skin graft to the columella.

Removal of mesh inside the nose and autologous rib cartilage reconstruction

This was a case involving a blunt nasal tip, a high starting point at the glabella, and mesh foreign material following a previous surgery. Four pieces of mesh were removed, and septal reconstruction and extension were performed using autologous rib cartilage.

How to remove mesh and reconstruct a contracted nose

In a patient presenting with post-inflammatory nasal contracture and nasal obstruction, unexpected mesh and residual donor rib cartilage found in the nasal tip were removed. The entire septum and both lower lateral cartilages were then reconstructed using autologous rib cartilage.

Rhinoplasty method after foreign material (mesh and thread) removal

A case of a patient who presented with a crooked nasal bridge, dorsal hump, and high radix after previous surgery using mesh and threads. Through a closed approach, the foreign materials were removed, and lateral osteotomy along with autologous rib cartilage reconstruction of the nasal tip and bridge was performed.

Common questions before reading the cases

Where can I review cases where mesh was removed?

There is a case documenting that mesh was found in the septum during revision surgery and completely removed. That article also explains the surgeon's clinical judgment regarding the upturned nose and the condition of the septum. Because this removal was recorded based on intraoperative findings for that specific patient, having a history of mesh use does not mean every patient presents with the same condition or requires the same extent of removal.

Should I also review the history of other materials in revisions involving mesh?

One case records a sequence of surgeries using an L-shaped silicone implant and ear cartilage, followed later by a silicone implant and mesh, and finally donor rib cartilage and a silicone implant. In situations where materials have changed multiple times, it is difficult to explain the current condition by looking at mesh alone. It is helpful to read through sequentially to see what was placed during which surgery and what was identified this time.
